According to scripture: “The rich rule over the poor and the borrower is slave to the lender.” We live in a culture which teaches us that we deserve the best of the best and that there is a need for immediate gratification … “I want what I want and I want it NOW!” So, we buy what we want even though we can’t afford to purchase those things and we get deeper and deeper in debt. In the process, we lose our freedom. We become enslaved to the debt … bound up in the trap that debt creates in our lives. Because of this, we’re unable to live the life that God intends for us to live. We become focused on the things of the world rather than the things of God.
Ultimately … this is an issue of the heart. God knows that we can’t serve two masters; either we will hate the one and love the other, or we will be devoted to one and despise the other. We CANNOT serve God and worldly wealth (think “materialism”). God knows … and we need to come to grips with this reality … that wherever of treasure is that’s where our heart will be also. Debt is a taskmaster, it will consume our lives. We must work diligently to escape the debt trap.
