Gateway Christian Church is known as an Independent Christian Church. We’re not part of any denomination and sometimes folks wonder about our history. The Christian church has a long history reaching back to what is known as the Second Great Awakening which began at the turn of the 19th Century (1790-1840) . . . and ultimately, back to the New Testament Church described in the Book of Acts. Historical figures such as Barton W. Stone, Alexander Campbell, and Walter Scott are well known as key leaders of what came to be known as the Restoration Movement. The idea behind this movement was to break ties with the religious establishment and get back to (restore) what the New Testament Church was like . . . what God intended it to be. Here are some of the slogans of the Restoration Movement:
- Where the scripture speaks, we speak; where the scriptures are silent, we are silent
- We are Christians only, but not the only Christians
- In essentials UNITY, in non-essentials LIBERTY, in all things LOVE
- No creed but Christ, no book but the Bible, no law but love, no name but the divine
In this series, we hope to shed some light on the historical background of who we are and why we do things the way we do. It is our hope and desire to simply be who and what God has called us to be.
